MLAG 2025 Pre-Gathering Classes

MLAG will again present three Pre-Gathering workshops in 2025

Though the Gathering proper does not begin until Wednesday, June 4, 2025, these Pre-MLAG workshops will provide some wonderful options for early arrivals. The workshops will cost $130 per person. Instructors and levels are described below.  You may register on-line for these workshops choosing the Pre-Gathering Class Only Ticket option under the Tickets drop down menu or include a Pre-Gathering class as part of your registration for the Gathering proper.  If you need assistance with registration, please call our hot line. As usual, we will be limiting the maximum number of students in each workshop to 20 students so, if you’re considering taking one of these workshops, you should register as soon as you can.

The workshops will be conducted in three 3-hour sessions beginning at 9 am on Tuesday, June 3, 2025 in classrooms at Shippensburg University. You will be notified of the details prior to arrival. If you register for a dorm room, your meals are all provided; otherwise, you will need to bring your lunch or purchase lunch in the dining hall.

These workshops provide a great opportunity for some hands-on training with three of the best autoharp players and teachers in the world. For at least the next few years there will be a Patsy Tressler Memorial Award. A random drawing from the names of all Pre-Gathering participants (who are registered for the full Gathering) will be made on Wednesday night and one lucky individual will be given a check to cover the cost of the class.

Pre-MLAG Workshops
Tuesday 9-12 & 1:30-4:30 • Wednesday 9-12

Phyllis Davis - Beginning Autoharp

Whether you are a new player or you want to brush up on your basic skills, this nine-hour Beginner Pre-Gathering Class is for you! We will begin very basic, but by the end of the three sessions, you will be playing some melody and chording along with your vocals and be able to play along with others. The limited class size offers lots of individual attention.

You do not need to know how to read music for this class, but great if you can. Please bring two finger picks and a thumb pick. I am looking forward to meeting you!  It will be fun, I promise!

Phyllis Davis has been playing autoharp since 2006 when she went to MLAG, purchased her first instrument, and went to the Boot Camp. However, she has been playing music since she received an accordion for her eighth birthday. She plays autoharp with the Mad River Valley Dulcimer Society, and clarinet and saxophone with her local community concert band and jazz band. Phyllis has been the beginner instructor at Buckeye Dulcimer Festival for many years, and has been the instructor for the Boot Camp at MLAG quite a few times.

Charles Whitmer - Autoharp Tecnique Refinements & Fundamentals

Come discover various playing techniques to enhance your autoharp playing, both melodies and accompaniments, through the playing of songs in a wide variety of genres: Songs In Mixolydian Mode, Ballads, Old Time Fiddle Tunes, Irish Songs, Songs In Dorian Mode, Mountain Music, Scottish Instrumentals and String Band Songs.

As we traverse this variety of songs we will focus not only on playing in the styles of these genres, but also on fundamental techniques to make them sound their best on autoharp. We will begin where everyone is at in their playing and gradually refine our technique and sound together through various techniques by enhancing the fundamental techniques we will explore to achieve this.

Learning this wide variety of songs in many different genres will be the vehicle for us to refine our autoharp playing as we also simultaneously focus on autoharp playing fundamentals that are enjoyable to use and play for intermediate level autoharp players.
