MLAG 2026 Pre-Gathering Classes

MLAG will again present three Pre-Gathering workshops in 2026

Though the Gathering proper does not begin until Wednesday, June 3, 2026, three Pre-MLAG workshops will provide some wonderful options for early arrivals. The workshops will cost $130 per person.  After registration opens in November of 2025, you may register on-line for these workshops choosing the Pre-Gathering Class Only Ticket option under the Tickets drop down menu or include a Pre-Gathering class as part of your registration for the Gathering proper.  If you need assistance with registration, please call our hot line. As usual, we will be limiting the maximum number of students in each workshop to 20 students so, if you’re considering taking one of these workshops, you should register as soon as you can.

The workshops will be conducted in three 3-hour sessions beginning at 9 am on Tuesday, June 2, 2026 in classrooms at Shippensburg University. You will be notified of the details prior to arrival. If you register for a dorm room, your meals are all provided; otherwise, you will need to bring your lunch or purchase lunch in the dining hall.

These workshops provide a great opportunity for some hands-on training with three of the best autoharp players and teachers in the world.

John Hollandsworth - Beginning Autoharp

Please join experienced instructor and Autoharp Hall of Famer John Hollandsworth for an intensive 9-hour beginning autoharp workshop that will start from ground zero. Topics that will be covered include proper holding of the instrument for efficient playing, the use and types of picks, proper right hand and left hand techniques, tunes in both 3/4 and 4/4 time, recognizing chord changes, playing well with others, jam etiquette, tips for playing by ear, and tuning tips. We will also include an introduction to melody playing. Handouts will be provided.

Bring an autoharp in good playing condition, one thumb pick and two finger picks, either metal or plastic, and a music stand if desired.

You will get a great head start on the complete MLAG festival so that you can more fully enjoy your week of workshops and playing with others!

Eileen Kozloff - Intermediate and Up

“It’s All About the Song”

This workshop is for singers and writers and those that want to be both! Emphasis will be on bringing out the best of the songs you love and the ones you may have started writing.

During the nine hours of this workshop, you will have group time and individual (private) time with me. We will work on finding the ideal singing range for your voice, arrangements, dynamics, taking breaks, and the supportive role of the autoharp while singing. Fun writing exercises will lubricate your writing skills by
composing new verses to old songs and wordsmithing to find just the perfect word to convey your feelings and messaging for your intended audience.

This workshop is suitable for musicians of all ages and stages: beginner to advanced, and even those who don’t play an instrument but just want to write and sing songs

Evo Bluestein - Intermediate and Up

“Four Steps”

Join Evo for an intensive journey through the four steps that make up his approach to autoharp. Inspired by the master Kilby Snow, Evo’s style works great for old time and bluegrass and is useful in many other genres. The steps include approaches for rhythm accompaniment and melody picking. After that we’ll get into swingy rhythm and bluesy drag notes (slurs).

Here’s an overview of what students will be immersed in, starting at YOUR level and going as far as you want: Step One: pinch-strum (quarter notes) a basic way of keeping rhythm; Step Two: Full rhythm for accompaniment, eighth notes; Step Three: pinch melody, the first method for melody playing; and Step Four: full rhythm melody, combining step two and three. Extries: Designing interesting solos with swingy rhythm and drag notes.

Evo’s playing style is unique, and he is an experienced teacher who has produced instructional materials, both in video and print formats. You will progress in your own style by incorporating his philosophy and energy into your playing!
