Each evening our free Social Hours give you an opportunity to catch up with friends, share experiences and ideas, and just enjoy each other’s company for a relaxing hour. On some days, we may ask one of our performers to stop by and and hang out.

The Mountain Laurel Board Members will perform a few songs on autoharp and other instruments to get the festivities off to a solid musical start.

MLAG 2023 Workshop - Kim Goodhue "Rag on Outta Here" -Thu 6/8, 11:30AM

Bring along your chromatic harp (diatonics won’t work well here), or just come to enjoy singing these favorites from the treasure trove of old-time ragtime style. We’ll learn, then sing, songs by the Lovin’ Spoonful, Charlie Poole, and the jazz tradition. Feel free to bring your own piece from this genre to share.

MLAG 2023 Workshop Leader Concert - Thu 6/8, 1:45 PM

In addition to our featured performers, MLAG includes many workshops taught by other members of our community. This concert allows those workshop leaders to talk briefly about their workshops, and perform a tune; if there’s time, maybe even two tunes. While the virtual track offers just 6 workshops from 6 instructors, this concert will give a taste of what’s available to those attending Mountain Laurel in person.

Try a song in different keys; get the understanding that when you switch keys with the setup, the next keys will be the same patterns. Learn it once and play it in any key. Listen to how your voice sounds different in all the keys. Be observant about how your voice sounds and feels in different keys.

MLAG 2023 Virtual Workshop - "A Bit of Bluegrass" - George McCoy - Fri 6/9, 11:30 AM

Level: Beginner & Up

In this workshop, I will teach you how to make your autoharp sound like a banjo or a mandolin. Learn these techniques and you can sit in with any bluegrass group or play foot-tapping bluegrass solos with the best of them. I will show you the picking style that helped me to win the MLAG championship last year. The picking style you'll be learning can be used with finger picks or bare nails. I will show you my top three brands of finger picks. We'll also learn ways to keep those fast-moving finger picks from flying off your fingers. Join us for a little pickin' and grinnin'. You'll need a chromatic or G diatonic autoharp for this workshop. The ability to play scales and simple melodies is very helpful as well.

MLAG 2023 Virtual Jam - Fri 6/9, 1:45PM

The Jam Band will be in the Shippensburg auditorium, along with In Person jammers… and you can listen in and play along from home! We will mute your audio, but you will see the group playing in the hall as you join in the fun.” It’s a grand experiment in virtually playing together.

Join Kathy in a 12-bar blues in the key of G. The only chords needed are G7, C7, and D7. Embellishments like hammer-ons and pull-offs will add to the fun of playing. She will also present an 8-bar blues in the key of D, with D, D7, G, Ddim (or Gm), B7, E7, and A7.

31st Annual Mountain Laurel Autoharp Championship - Fri 6/9, 7:30PM

Anyone attending in person can enter and show off their skills. Five finalists will compete in a second round, and the top three winners will receive fine luthier autoharps as prizes. The 31st MLAG Champion will be a featured performer in 2024.
